Madrichim/ot and Teen Programming

Grades 8–12 · Meets Monday afternoons and select Sunday mornings

Madrichim/ot are teens in grades 8–12 who have finished their Bar/Bat/B’nei Mitzvah (B’Mitzvah for short) and want to stay connected to KS by giving back. They work alongside our teachers in Hebrew School Reimagined and at Holiday Preschool and Kindergarten: sitting with a student who needs help, running an activity, moving with a group during Hebrew Through Movement, and being exactly the kind of older kid younger students look up to.

No teaching experience is required, just a willingness to show up, be present with kids, and take the role seriously.

It’s one of our best answers to the question of what comes after B’Mitzvah, and our madrichim/ot are a big part of what makes HSR work.

Chagigat Torah

After B’Mitzvah, teens can work toward Chagigat Torah, a community celebration recognizing their continued Jewish growth in three areas: Torah (learning), Avodah (synagogue life), and Gemilut Chasadim (service). Being a madrich/a counts, along with helping with Family Education, volunteering, and taking part in services and events.

Kitty Stein Accessibility Fund Scholarship

Each year, Kerem Shalom awards a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior member who plans to attend college or another higher education program within two years of graduating. It honors the late Kitty Stein, a longtime KS member whose life was devoted to tikkun olam. Preference goes to applicants who are working to expand inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities, educate others about individual differences, or build dignity and compassion in the wider world. Applicants submit an application, a resume, and a 500-word essay about their inclusion or justice work and how it shapes their college plans. The recipient is notified in May and honored at our Shabbat of Recognition.

More for Teens

We’re building teen life at Kerem Shalom together with our teens, and we want to hear their ideas. Every month we send a roundup of opportunities for Jewish teens at KS and around the area. To get it, or to share an idea, email . Teens are welcome and encouraged to sign up with their own email.
