Kitah Zayin (7th Grade)

Meets Mondays, 6:30–8 pm, with dinner · 24 sessions a year

Seventh grade is its own track at Kerem Shalom, built around one big question: what has kept the Jewish people alive for 3,000 years, and what am I going to do about it?

Throughout the year, Zayin students move through Jewish history from ancient Israel to the present, placing the Torah stories they’ve grown up with inside the bigger story of the Jewish people. Most of them are having their Bar/Bat/B’nei Mitzvah (B’Mitzvah for short) this year, so the class is also a place to think about what it means to take your place in that story.

The year ends with a mitzvah project each student designs and presents to the whole community at our Shabbat of Recognition in May.

Sessions start with dinner together, because the conversation is better when everyone’s fed.

A few times a year, Kitah Zayin Family Learning brings parents and kids together for the evening, and we expect at least one adult from every family to be there.

Alongside class, students prepare for their own B’Mitzvah services with our clergy and a B’Mitzvah tutor. We’re happy to help families find one. We encourage Zayin students to come celebrate at each other’s B’Mitzvah services. Every student completes the full Zayin year, including after their own B’Mitzvah, because the cohort learns together all year.
