KS Afghan Resettlement Update

January 31, 2021

The past two months have been challenging and very rewarding as our team helps the sisters, Razia and Taiba, settle into their new life here. We help them understand English through daily visits and field trips to learn about their new surroundings. They have been attending weekly English classes in Lexington and are improving their communication skills. We have helped set up bank accounts and learn about the U.S. money system. They volunteered at Open Table and helped pack food boxes for Afghans in the area. We have started to explore employment, and we expect that Razia and Taiba will start new jobs this coming week.

The women have visited the homes of our team members, and last week we celebrated Razia’s birthday with a cake and candles. A small group gathered and sang Happy Birthday. We asked if there is a song in Dari, but they told us that they use the English song because birthdays aren’t traditionally celebrated in Afghanistan.

As we look to the future, we are seeking permanent housing in late spring for the two sisters. If you know of any apartments for rent near public transportation, please let us know.
